STORM SUMMARY 1-2-12

Flurries spread into the area on the afternoon on 1-1-12. This activity was off and on into the early afternoon hours on 1-2-12. There were some embedded snow showers that developed between 4-6am. This activity produced trace to less than in inch amounts (mostly ¼ inch amounts) mainly from a line from Rockford to south of Midway Airport. North of this line is where the majority of any accumulation occurred. Much of the snow was whipped around but winds gusting 30-35 mph at times.

Light snowfall began between 11pm on the 8th to 1am on the 9th. Temperatures at the onset of the light snowfall were around 30 degrees and by the time the snow exited by dawn, readings were in the lowers 20s. Winter’s going to clobber Chicago again, hitting us with colder than normal temperatures and nearly twice the normal amount of snowfall.

That’s according to long-range forecasters at AccuWeather.com.

“People in Chicago are going to want to move after this winter,” long-range meteorologist Josh Nagelberg said.

Forecasters also predict that the Chicago area, not New York, will endure the worst winter in the nation this season.

Rain, freezing rain and sleet began from south to north between 5-7am. There was some very light glazing initially. Temperatures and surface temperatures rose into The mid 30s 9-10am which ended the glazing. Salting was needed where the glazing occurred early am. Temperatures were around 30-32 at the onset of
