STORM SUMMARY 12-8 & 9-2013

Some light lake effect flurry and snow shower activity developed from just of the loop northward between 3-5am. The activity extended as far west as ORD. The lake effect flurries and snow showers diminished by 8am. Meanwhile, an area of light snow from the west spread into the area from west to east between 9-11am After an initial blast of snow, the intensities for the most part were quite light early to midafternoon. The snow intensity as forecast increased late afternoon before diminishing to flurries and spotty freezing drizzle 9-11pm. The heaviest snowfall occurred for much of the area between 4-8pm. Plowing and salting (multiple salt applications) were needed during the day and into the night. Despite pre-salting, the combination of the cold ground and cold air temperature led to a quick covering during the morning particularly from around North Ave. northward. The main area of snow exited the area between 9-11pm. Some patchy freezing drizzle, flurries and areas of very light snow occurred at times after midnight till 6-8am on the 9th.
