STORM SUMMARY 2-7&8-13

A storm system produced a variety of weather throughout northern and north central Illinois on 2-7. Temperatures did not vary much throughout the day as they stayed between 31 and 34 all day. Surface pavement temperatures were around 31 degrees at the onset of rain that moved into the area between 3-5am. With the subfreezing surfaces, the rain froze on contact. Freezing rain was mixed with sleet at times. As temperatures inched up to 33 and 34 mid morning, freezing rain turn to plain rain most areas. Between and 11am and Noon, rain switched to snow across much of Lake and McHenry Counties where it snowed and sometimes heavily for the remainder of the day. This resulted in heavy snowfall totals for this counties as they were placed under a winter storm warning. The remainder of the area saw a changeover to snow between 2-4pm except Kendall, Will and southern Cook Counties where the changeover took place after 8pm. Those areas only received <1” totals. Beteen I88 and I80 amounts generally averaged between 1.5 and 4 inches. Snow diminished between 1-3am across the area. Precipitation totals for the system were in the .75 to 1.25 Inches so there was a lot of water involved with the storm. Temperatures between 12am and 7am on the 7th dropped to 20-24 degrees. This resulted in a lot of refreezing of water underneath the snow that fell. Plowing for areas mainly from around the I88 corridor northward was required along with salting. Since the area started with freezing rain, multiple salting applications was needed. Areas south of I88 primarily needed salting applications
