STORM SUMMARY 2-25&26-2015

A clipper type system spread snow into the northeast Illinois between 2:30 and 3:30pm on 2-25. This system produced on the average 2-3 inches of snow by midnight for most areas. After midnight, the system snow turned into a lake effect event and this ran into the afternoon hours of 2-26. The activity for Northern Cook County wrapped up by 12-2pm on 2-26. With lake effect, it is very common to end up with a wide variety of amounts as it just depends upon where the plumes of snow come in off of the lake and how long they sit over a given area. The bands of lake effect developed east of Green Bay over Lake Michigan and stretched all the Way down to northeast Illinois. This long fetch allowed for some intense snowfall to occur between 2-4am from near Lake Forest/Deerfield to Mt. Prospect and down to Elk Grove Village. In this corridor, snow totals of around 6-6.5 inches occurred by 6am on the 26th. The intensity of the lake effect was weaker thereafter until the snow diminished as amounts after daybreak were generally under an inch for the remainder of the event in this mentioned area. The heavier banding shifted southward to Chicago and Chicago’s South side after daybreak where 8 inch totals were observed. The totals in the heavy banding overnight and through midday on the 26th produced totals of 6.5 inches in Mt. Prospect to 6.4 inches as well as 6.8 inches 1 mile southeast of Elk Grove Village. The official snowfall at ORD was 5.7 inches which brought the monthly total to 26.4 inches. This now ranks as the 3rd snowiest month of February in history. Rockford had 2.2 for a season total of 27.8 or 2.8 below normal. Romeoville 2.9 for a season total of 31.0 or 4.0 above normal.
