An area of rain spread into Rockford 2-4 am Rockford and 3-5am Chicago, prior to the start of the morning commute. Precipitation began as light rain, freezing rain and sleet before diminishing to drizzle and ending by late morning. Air temperatures for most of the area were at 32 degrees with surface pavement temps running just under 32. Mainly in the form of rain. Rockford reported freezing rain till 7-8am while many surfaces in the Chicago area saw little icing except right at the onset as temperatures rose above 32 by 7am. With air and surface temperatures very borderline combined with the moisture coming in at the start of the am commute- everyone was encouraged to pre-salt to avoid any icing for the start of the work day.
