STORM SUMMARY 11-21&22-2014
Some patchy areas of drizzle and freezing drizzle moved into Rockford as well as the suburbs of Chicago just prior to midnight. A larger area or rain spread into the area between 12a and 2am. This activity diminished to very light rain and drizzle after 5am till 8am. Temperatures at the onset of the rain were all above freezing even at Rockford. Readings in the Chicago area were in the 34-36 range with pavement temperatures ranging between 31-33 degrees. The rain began as freezing rain from Rockford to Crystal Lake. As the air temperatures fell a bit to 33-34 in the Chicago area between 2-4am, this allowed the cold sub surfaces (readings were down to 24 eight inches below the surface) to freeze up the water on streets and lots after 2-3am from the ground up. Salting was needed throughout the area. On some lots and streets which are in shady parts were locations that needed the most attention. Rainfall amounts throughout the area were mainly in the .15 to .30 range. Some folks did pre-salting and this prevented some of the refreezing of water overnight.
