STORM SUMMARY 1-11-11

Light snow was slow to entirely cover the local area as dry levels in the lower levels of the atmosphere inhibited snowfall from reaching the ground until 5-7am on the morning of 1-11. There was some very light snowfall at times between 2-5am over Lake and Cook Counties. Meanwhile very light snow actually developed in the Rockford area around 10pm on 1-10 but only trace amounts were reported by midnight. Snow increased in intensity 7-8am. Light to occasional moderate snowfall then fell through 3pm before decreasing late afternoon and early evening. Lake enhancement produced higher snowfall totals in Lake , Cook, eastern DuPage and eastern Will Counties. Average totals west of I355 and including Rockford were 2-3 inches while the amounts to the east were in the 3-6 inch average range. Salting and plowing were required to clear surfaces. With the slow snowfall rates over the west burbs, applications of salt kept surfaces wet for much of the day. Officially at O’Hare Airport 5.9 inches was measured while Rockford had 2.9 inches The 5.9 inches at ORD was a new daily record for 1-11.
